The best upcoming Xbox One Games for 2020 – Twin Sticks Picks

Intro

2020 is set to be a great year for Xbox. We have some amazing games lined up with most coming to Games Pass, as well as a brand new Xbox console later in the year. Oh, and a brand new Halo! Here are my 16 picks of the best upcoming Xbox One Games for 2020 ordered by release date, and including Game Pass availability.

The best upcoming Xbox Ones Games for 2020 – January to April

January

Set to be a slow start to the year, January is the perfect time to play all the games you’ve picked up over Xmas or purchased in New Year sales (I picked up Titanfall 2: Deluxe Edition for £3.50!)

1.Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot

Developer: CyberConnect2

Publisher: Bandai Namco Entertainment

Release Date: 17th January 2020

Games Pass: No

Kakarot is an action-RPG that follows the story of Goku from the main anime series (which if you’re a similar age to me, you likely grew up watching). It contains over the top and visually impressive Dragon Ball fighting mechanics and, new to the series, RPG progression and an open world.

The open world which, although small, is available to fully explore on Goku’s Nimbus cloud. There’s even a fishing mini game using Goku’s removed tail (what?). It was incredibly fun to play at this year’s EGX and the RPG mechanics will likely add significant depth to the experience.

February

With two games released within three days of each other, February will pose 2020’s first difficult choice – which should you play first? I’m personally going for the latter…

2.Gods and Monsters

Developer: Ubisoft Quebec

Publisher: Ubisoft

Release Date: February 25th 2020

Games Pass: No

Comparisons to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild have been coming thick and fast since the release of the initial trailer for Gods and Monsters. Set in a beautiful open world inspired by Greek Mythology you play as a fallen hero who embarks on a quest to save Ancient Greek Gods.

It sounds simple, but like with the equally simplistic story of Breath of the Wild, a lot of the enjoyment will hopefully come from being present in the world. My biggest concern is that it will be another Ubisoft open world with endless activities to tick off a huge list. It does look beautiful though.

3.One Punch Man: A Hero Nobody Knows

Developer: Spike Chunsoft

Publisher: Bandai Namco

Release Date: 28th February 2020

Games Pass: No

In the One Punch Man manga and anime series the titular hero Saitama can defeat any enemy with a single punch. This leads to a hilarious punchline (no pun intended) at the end of every episode when a great hulking monster is annihilated by a small bald man. Taking this premise and putting it in video game form is especially intriguing though. How will the game work if Saitama can defeat everyone with just one punch?

Thankfully the developers kept in line with the comedy from the source material. Each fight, like in the series, involves lower class heroes fending off an undefeatable enemy until Saitama arrives at the scene, shown by a countdown timer on screen.

You can play as many heroes including my favourite: the Class-C “Mumen Rider”. He wears full cycling gear (including arm and knee pads) and cycles between fights on a push bike. It’s hilarious in the series and the game is set to be equally as funny.

March

Four games coming in March, including the huge Doom Eternal and Watchdogs Legion. Thankfully, some March releases are available on Games Pass.

4. Watchdogs: Legion

Developer: Ubisoft Toronto

Publisher: Ubisoft

Release Date: 3rd March 2020

Games Pass: No

The main talking point for Legion is the fact you can control any NPC in-game (including enemies) by recruiting them into your anarchic anti-government gang: an ex MI5 spy, a cockney gangster or even a professional assassin turned lovable grandma. I am worried it sounds too good to be true though.

But looking past the question marks around the NPC system, Legion is set in London in the near dystopian future. I’ve been waiting for a modern open world game to be set in London for a long time and now it’s finally on its way. This alone places Watch Dogs: Legion securely on my best upcoming Xbox One games for 2020 list.

5.Ori and the Will of the Wisps

Developer: Moon Studios

Publisher: Xbox Game Studios

Release Date: 11th March 2020

Games Pass: Yes

Ori and the Blind Forest was a beautiful Metroidvania platformer released on Xbox One in 2015. Now, five years later the sequel, Ori and the Will of the Wisps, is being released on the 11th March exclusively for Xbox One (and Windows).

Initial trailers and screenshots show a game which, although hard to believe, looks even more beautiful than the first. Developers Moon Studios have also promised an emotional story similar to the first entry and improved combat due to the addition of weapons like bows and swords. There’s also a handful of abilities to equip which can be fully upgraded throughout your journey. It seems like Ori and the Will of the Wisps is dipping its toe in RPG-build systems which I’m interested to see play out.

6. Doom: Eternal

Developer: id Software

Publisher: Bethesda Softworks

Release Date: 20th March 2020

Games Pass: No

The follow up to 2016s Doom smash hit is set to follow suit. While we can expect more of the fast paced first person action and the brilliant metal soundtrack from returning composer Mick Gordon, we could never have imagined the new arsenal of weapons. The grapple hook shotgun, an over the shoulder mounted flamethrower and even a laser axe. That sentence alone should be enough to warrant a play through of the roughly 20 hour campaign.

7. Bleeding Edge

Developer: Ninja Theory

Publisher: Xbox Games Studios

Release Date: 24th March 2020

Games Pass: Yes

The incredibly talented Ninja Theory surprised a lot of people when they announced their next title, Bleeding Edge, was a 4v4 brawler coming exclusively to Xbox One. But since then, initial trailers have looked great and it seems like Bleeding Edge may fit a niche in the market.

On a superficial level it looks like Overwatch crossed with For Honour, but I’m sure it will be much deeper than that. For starters each character looks creative in design and based on Ninja Theory’s previous work on Devil May Cry and Hellblade: Senuas Sacrifice, the combat will surely be exceptional.

April

We all know what’s coming out in April…Or we did. Cyberpunk 2077 has been delayed until September 17th, five months later than expected.

8. Disintegration

Developer: V1 Interactive

Publisher: Private Division

Release Date: Early 2020 (Hopefully before April)

Games Pass: No

A brand new IP from the co-creator of Halo is a hard game to pin down. It’s one part FPS, one part a RTS game where you fly around the battlefield on a “grav-cycle”. In flight you participate in the battle while issuing commands to your crew.

A 10 hour single player campaign along with full 5v5 multiplayer sounds like a complete package too. I also appreciate how the Apex Legend ping system has made its way into Disintegration with each player able to project huge holographic emoji’s for other team mates to see.

It sounds promising and I can’t wait to try it out in the beta (coming soon…)

The best upcoming Xbox One Games for 2020 – May to August

May

The recent delay of Cyberpunk 2077 until September 17th and Marvel’s Avengers until September 4th is good news for games coming out around this time. Wasteland 3 will likely now take up a lot of my time.

9. Wasteland 3

Developer: inXile Entertainment

Publisher: Xbox Game Studios, Deep Silver

Release Date: 19th May 2020

Games Pass: Yes

An isometric squad based RPG with deep RPG systems, Wasteland 3 is set to build on the success of the previous entry in 2014 (and even the original game in 1988!). Set in Colorado you’ll battle, solo or  two player co-op, across its frozen landscapes and intriguing locations as various factions battle for control of the region.

With full backing from Microsoft and a larger development team, Wasteland 3 is set to be bigger and better than its predecessors and one of my most anticipated games of the year. I just need to finish Wasteland 2 on Games Pass first…

August

10. Tell me Why

Developer: Dontnod

Publisher: Xbox Game Studios

Release Date: Episodic Throughout 2020 (I’m assuming the first episode will be released before August)

Games Pass: Yes

Watching the trailer for Tell me Why from Life is Strange developers, Dontnod, at this year’s X019 I was immediately taken aback. It showcased a game with a strong, and mature, emotional narrative weaved throughout.

Tell me Why is set to be a dense character study involving twins separated 10 years ago due to a large ‘event’. They are reunited and forced to understand each other as well as understand the awful past event. The game is also set to make history as the first major video game to include a transgender character. This is definitely one to watch if you like strong narratives in gaming.

The best upcoming Xbox One Games for 2020 – September to December

September to December

The moment we’ve all been waiting for. The release of the Xbox Series X and Halo: Infinite.

11. Halo: Infinite

Developer: 343 Industries, SkyBox Labs

Publisher: Xbox Game Studios

Release Date: Late 2020

Games Pass: Yes

I’ve not been this excited for a Halo title since Halo 3 in 2007. A slick new game engine, a development process which understands what made the original trilogy great rather than trying to copy trends (Halo 4 and 5!) and two trailers which look undoubtedly Halo.

I’m quietly confident with this one, but let’s hold judgement until the gameplay trailers are released. Surely the last five years have been enough to produce a Halo title which returns to the Golden Age of Xbox and more importantly the Golden Age of the Halo franchise.

12. Marvel’s Avengers

Developer: Crystal Dynamics, Eidos Montrèal

Publisher: Square Enix

Release Date: May 15th 2020 (EDIT: Delayed unitl Sep 4th)

Games Pass: No

The new Avengers game is an odd one. Released 8 years after the original film in an already saturated superhero market and telling a standalone story which isn’t cannon for the MCU. There’s also a lot of confusion around what the game actually is. A single-player action adventure where you switch between each titular hero and a four player co-op game with RPG elements and QTE’s.

But looking past that, the gameplay demo looks great. Let’s just hope Square Enix keep the QTEs to a minimum.

13. Cyberpunk 2077

Developer: CD Projekt Red

Publisher: CD Projekt

Release Date: 16th April 2020 (Edit: Delayed until September 17th).

Games Pass: No

A game which needs no introduction, Cyberpunk 2077 is set not only to be the best Xbox One game for 2020, but potentially the best of the current generation. Every gameplay demo looks world class and I wouldn’t expect anything less from CD Projekt Red.

I’m a little concerned about how the shooting feels as it’s so hard to get this right first time in RPGs (look at Fallout 3 and The Outer Worlds as examples). Having said that everything else looks impeccable. Roll on 17th September 2020, AKA the day that 90% of gamers are off work.

14. Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2

Developer: Ninja Theory

Publisher: Xbox Game Studios

Games Pass: Yes

Release: Late 2020

Currently all the information we have for Senua’s Saga is a teaser trailer showcasing the impressive graphical capabilities of the Xbox Series X. But, if going of the first entry in the series alone, this is set to be an equally harrowing and thought provoking experience. This is definitely a game worthy of launch title status for Xbox’s next console.

Upcoming Xbox One Games for 2020 with a release date TBA

15. 15 Minutes

Developer: Luis Antonio

Publisher: Annapurna Interactive

Release Date: 2020 (TBA)

Games Pass: No

I’ve said before, but if executed properly 12 Minutes could be a true gem. An indie title developed by Luis Antonio, artist for The Witness, where you’re trapped in a 12 minute time loop. An uninvited visitor knocks at your door, past horrors rise to the surface and you have 12 minutes to save your family.

The 12 Minutes website lists film inspirations like The Shining, Rear Window and Momento with Games Radar even praising the game like it was directed by “Stanley Kubrick”. As a fan of film and gaming alike I’m extremely excited about this one.

16. Way to the Woods

Developer: Anthony Tan

Publisher: Team17 Digital Limited

Release Date: 2020 (TBA)

Games Pass: Yes

Way of the Woods in another Indie game released in 2020 developed amazingly by one person. Playing as parent and child deer you must find your way back to the woods in a world where humans are unusually absent.

Above all, Way of the Woods looks absolutely jaw-dropping with a distinct visual style and masterful artistic flair. This is set to be an especially cathartic experience and I can’t wait to get lost as I find my way home in 2020.
